Vegans visiting York

Been away in gorgeous York this weekend visiting family. It was really busy; jam packed with tourists! We stayed at a really sweet self catering Airbnb house so we had our own kitchen and didn’t have to eat out all the time. We did however treat ourselves today though. After visiting the Jorvik Viking Centre with my 12 year old, we popped into the newly opened Source the Deli to grab some vegan chocolate cake (above) recommended to us on the York Vegans Facebook group.

So thanks ever so much to the York vegans, the chocolate cake was scrummy. Very dark and rich and so pretty with little gold flakes and shards of chocolate on top. They’re so new at Source they haven’t yet got a coffee machine so they directed us to nearby Dark Horse in the market telling us it was great coffee and it certainly was (and yes they had soya milk).

The area we were in (Shambles Market) had lots of street food sellers and I was really impressed how many had vegan options on their menus – Sicilian, French, Thai, Korean, North African and more. The world is finally changing and veganism is becoming accepted!

So we mooched about town for a bit then wound our way over to Goji vegetarian cafe where we had the most enormous tofu hot dog! It was in a soft warm fresh white baguette loaded with sautéed red onions and I must say the yellow mustard was utterly divine. Not hot but really tasty. I’ve come to liking mustard later in life hence my enthusiasm! We sat in this pretty courtyard area pictured below. Service was swift and friendly and the Earl Grey tea perfect for us weary travellers. Prices a little on the steep side but it was a treat.
